What are the keys to making your paint job last? Anything from your brush to the base walls and ceiling you’re working on can affect how long your paint stays in condition. Here are 10 facts you need to know when you’re getting ready to start painting.

1. Use Quality Brushes and Rollers

If you’ve invested in premium Benjamin Moore paint, you’ll want to get a quality brush and roller as well. A high-quality brush will leave fewer bristles on the wall. Not sure what to get? Our staff can help you pick the right brush to go with your paint.

2. Cover Your Furniture

The easiest way to avoid having to clean your furniture is by covering it with drop cloths before you start painting. This will protect your furniture from paint drips and other accidents.

3. Canvas Drop Cloths

Even if you’re a great painter, accidents happen. Use real canvas drop cloths to protect your floors while painting. Make sure to immediately wipe up any paint you drop using a damp cloth.

4. Cut a Ridge in Your Textured Ceiling

Are you trying to avoid stains against your textured ceiling? The best way to get your brush into a tight edge is by scraping a gap in the ceiling texture along the edges of your ceiling.

5. Don’t Paint Two Walls at a Time

Don’t waste a single drop of your premium Benjamin Moore paint. It’s important to manage your paint properly by sticking to one area at a time.

It’s also easier to plan out how you’re going to use your paint and drop cloths when you finish one wall at a time.

6. Get an Extra Bucket

It’s not practical to carry around a five-gallon pail of paint everywhere you go. Invest in a few solid buckets or rolling pans, that way you can bring your paint with you to different areas of the project.

7. Don’t Use Cheap Paint

The paint on your walls is meant to last you for years. Cheap paint will crack, rub off, and get marked up quickly. Benjamin Moore paint is designed to last for decades.

8. Degrease Your Walls

Dirty walls are a common problem for homeowners attempting to paint their walls. Grease may cause your paint to bubble and refuse to stick. You may need to use a degreaser to remove grime and oily surfaces on your walls.

9. Use a Work Light

You may miss a spot and not realize it until later if the lighting in your home isn’t the greatest. It’s best to examine your paint job with a work light to make sure you won’t need to come back to it later.

10. Remove Switch Plates

Struggling to paint around your light switch? The easiest way is to unscrew it from the wall and paint around it. You can also use painter’s tape if you don’t feel like unscrewing it.
